‘Hunger Games’ Community Reacts to Casting of Rue and Thresh

Here are some reactions regarding the recent casting of Rue and Thresh!

From Down with the Capitol:

It seems like the Hunger Games FB is going with a “Tributes” theme so my guessing is that District 10 Tributes will be released next Monday. I’m very happy with Lionsgate decisions to pick Amandla and Dayo. Both are who I imagined when I read the Hunger Games series and I’m very happy that they are unknown actors. I hope Lionsgate decides to stick with the “unknown” theme for Tributes so that we will see them as the Tributes rather then seeing them as big name celebrities who are playing Tributes. One thing is for sure, with what acting I have seen from Amandla, I have no doubt that she will be able to bring audiences into tears with her portrayal of Rue.

I was very excited to hear of Amandla and Dayo being cast as Rue and Thresh. It’s exciting to have some unknown actors step into these roles. This will really allow them to make the roles their own and to really become the characters for the fans. We won’t be looking at Amandla and Dayo onscreen and remembering other projects they have worked on, we will see them just as the District 11 Tributes. It also helps how much they truly look the parts, at least in my mind, (and many fans as well, as we’ve heard an overwhelming positive response). Dayo looks almost a big brother to Amandla which is sweet. And Amandla herself, is “precious”, I knew this movie would make me cry, but with her in the role of Rue, I think I better invest in a bigger box of Kleenex.

Feedback from The Hob:

It’s refreshing to see such positive feedback with this casting! I think the fact that they are not as well known is great, no room for judgement. They seem to to fill the roles perfectly, looks-wise!!

I think Amandla Stenberg has a such a sweet smile. It makes you want to do nice things for her, so I can see Katniss going out of her way for Rue in the movie. And Dayo Okeniyi looks tough, which is perfect for the role of Thresh.

They did a great job with these two!!! They both look exactly as I picture them.

Amy O. (Reader) Riverdale, UT

These two look seemingly perfect, she’s sweet and pretty, he’s handsome but also has an underlying air that says he can be a bit formidable. I am so glad they went with relative unknowns for these characters!

Rebekah G. (Reader) Portland, OR

I’m happy with these two. They’ll be great!
