Let me tell you, I was really excited to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. So when I was told I would get to go to the premiere with HG Girl on Fire, I was in shock. This was my opportunity to maybe see some of the cast, and experience this movie before most of the world. I’d never been to a movie premiere before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. Yes, I knew I would get to see the movie, but that was about all I knew.
Day 1: Fan Camp
I got to Los Angeles on day 2 of the Catching Fire Fan Camp. That alone, was craziness. But add some of the cast doing signings and there were lines around the building to get autographs. You could feel the excitement of all these fans, and it bumped up my excitement level just by being around them! Jeffrey Wright, Jena Malone, and Sam Claflin had all taken time to sign thousands of autographs for the fans who were camped out at LA Live. After already going to premiere after premiere, they seemed genuinely happy to be doing this for fans. As part of a group of websites invited to the premiere, we had the opportunity to take pictures of the cast signing posters, books, magazines, and even some homemade artwork. They were great with the fans, trying to chat with them as they went through the line. I got a couple of amazing shots of the cast, which I’m super proud of. I mean, come on. Sam looks like he’s modeling for Ray-Ban or something!
I figured that since the rest of the cast was so busy with press interviews, no one else was coming and I was okay with that. But then we heard the screams of joy. Josh Hutcherson had arrived. Seriously, how that guy has the energy to do all these events is beyond me. He was really great with the fans, even though he (like most of the main cast) wasn’t feeling 100%. And then, Francis Lawrence showed up! It’s a good thing he did this for Catching Fire, because I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot harder for him to show up at events from now on.
I tried to be all cool & professional when getting my book signed by everyone, maybe even ask them a question or two. Yes, the other HG Girl on Fire girls were able to talk to them, even get some quick videos. But I was too excited & shocked that they were taking time out of their schedules to spend hours signing autographs for all the fans! I think I managed to get out a few “thank you”s for the movie, though.
And yes, we also got some things signed (like my Catching Fire book!). So that was my first premiere bonus gift. It was also great meeting all the different bloggers & admins. When I’m home, I see their sites, and see that they’re just as passionate as I am about this series, but I have no idea what they’re really like. But then I meet them, and there’s an instant kinship that is born out of our love for The Hunger Games. Plus, I hadn’t met most of the girls of HG Girl on Fire in person before this weekend, so another bonus!
Oh, and by the way, while we were busy taking pictures of all the awesome Catching Fire graphics in LA Live, we missed Jeffrey Wright walking right behind us! He’s right down there in the corner! Seriously, for bloggers, we can be a bit single-minded!
Day 2: Premiere & After Party!
Okay, I’ll admit it was hard to sleep the night before the premiere. I was so excited to see the movie! It was like trying to sleep on Christmas Eve as a kid, knowing what would come the next day. And did I forget to mention, that when we got the invitations, there was a little thing on there, “Exclusive after party immediately following the screening.” Wait a minute. We’re invited to the after party? And that’s another bonus for the trip! So not only do we get to see the movie before most of the world, we get to celebrate it afterwards with some of the stars of the movie!
But I’m getting ahead of myself. First the premiere! Unfortunately, we didn’t all get the chance to be there for the red carpet, so a group of us bloggers & admins went next door for drinks & appetizers. It’s kind of a funny experience to sit down with a bunch of bloggers before a major event. We all had our phones out checking Twitter & Instagram for the latest on the premiere. We were all so excited to see the movie, but at the same time we were missing coverage on the premiere! We weren’t allowed to take phones or cameras into the theater, so giving them up beforehand was a bit difficult for some.
Once we were sitting in the theater, watching the end of the Yahoo! Live Stream, the anticipation was killing me! We had amazing seats, only about 8 rows from the front, and I was sitting on the aisle. It was a great spot for people watching. It was cool seeing the various types of people who come to movie premieres. There were fans (like us), families, celebrities, and stars from the movie. And we were all there to enjoy a great movie. I had never met the people I was sitting with before then, and we were still talking nonstop until the CEO of Lionsgate came out to introduce Francis Lawrence & the stars of the movie. Then, we got to experience The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I won’t go into my thoughts on the movie, but you can see my review HERE. By the end, we were all stunned, exhausted, and we couldn’t stop talking about it! There just weren’t enough words to describe what we had just experienced.
But after grabbing our phones, it was off to the after party! First off, we were greeted by the timpanists from the tribute parade, which was awesome. Once inside, there were white roses everywhere, models straight from the Capitol, mockingjays everywhere, and lights shaped like the arena on the ceiling. There was just so much going on it was hard to take it all in. Everywhere I looked there was someone from the movie, or a random celebrity. We did get the chance to talk to some of them, like Bruno Gunn, Nelson Ascenscio & Brooke Bundy, Megan Hayes, E. Roger Mitchell, and more. There were some who were just surrounded by fans, like Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Claflin. And then there were past tributes from The Hunger Games, like Jackie Emerson, who enjoyed the new movie just as much as we did.
Then, to top off the night, we got to chat with Francis Lawrence. That made my night! He was so nice, and we even got a picture!
By the time the party was over, we were all exhausted. But we still couldn’t stop talking about the movie! I think it was around 2 am before we finally couldn’t stay awake any longer.
I don’t know if we’ll get invited to the Mockingjay premieres. It would be amazing if we did. But if we don’t, I’m so glad The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was my premiere experience, and it’s an experience I will never forget.
