The latest from Cannes: Jennifer Lawrence expected at Catching Fire party, PSH nabs new role, other cast projects updated

Cannes Film Festival is officially going on right now.  Studios come out in droves to present their films for distribution, make casting announcements, throw lavish parties, and enjoy the films screened at the fest. It looks like Lionsgate is throwing its biggest bash ever to celebrate Catching Fire later this year and to garner interest and possibly international sales ahead of Mockingjay 1 & 2 hitting theaters in 2014 and 2015. Jennifer Lawrence is rumored to attend the soiree.

The Hunger Games cast’s other projects have also had some news. Sam Claflin‘s Love, Rosie, currently filming, and co-starring Lily Collins, has been picked up for international distribution by Mister Smith Entertainment. No word yet on domestic distribution for that one.  Terrence Malick will reveal footage from his Knight of Cups, featuring Wes Bentley, to find international buyers. If Wes shows up in support, we’ll post pics here on the site.  In addition, Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in the new film God’s Pocket.

If you missed it the other day, or just want a better look, here’s a closer photo of the Catching Fire display outside the Majestic Barriere hotel in Cannes, and a great video to see it all in action!

Could Pitch Perfect’s Rebel Wilson be up for a role in the next Hunger Games movie?

I love Rebel Wilson, so I was excited to see this new interview from Buzzfeed where Rebel mentions being a fan of Jennifer Lawrence and recently meeting about a possible role in the next Hunger Games movie!  What role do you think Rebel could play in Mockingjay?

Here’s an excerpt from Buzzfeed :

Ah, so you’re a J.Law fan?

RW: Yeah, yeah, and I’ve met her. I met her at a party and she was super-duper nice. She’s really quite tall. Which I found — I don’t know if you get that impression when you see her in movies, but she’s quite tall. Yeah, and she’s just really nice and I love The Hunger Games and I can’t wait for the new one to come out.

Ooh, would we ever see you in a role in The Hunger Games?

RW: Um, seriously, I have had a meeting about being in The Hunger Games. Yes.

Oh! In what district?

RW: It was one of the people in the capitol. That’s all I’ll say.

That would be good. That’s a good choice.

RW: Yeah, because there aren’t a lot of roles open, because they’ve all already been cast, but that would be awesome. I’d love to be in The Hunger Games.

Francis Lawrence on changes in Catching Fire, scenes he’s proud of, progress on Mockingjay & more

In more from MTV’s fantastic interview with the Hunger Games : Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence, we learn a bit more about Francis thoughts on changes made in Catching Fire, the scene’s he’s proud of , and also where things stand in terms of prepping to film Mockingjay parts 1 & 2.

From MTV:

On whether he ever called Gary for advice:
“No, no, I never talked to Gary about anything. For no reason other than I had Nina [Jacobson], the producer, and John [Kilik], the producer, and [author] Suzanne [Collins], and there were a lot of people with a lot of knowledge of the material, especially Suzanne. One of the first things that I did when I got the job—I think it was five or six days after I got the job—I got on a plane to New York and sat in a room with Suzanne, and she and I basically went through the book together. And just kind of created a beat sheet over the course of three days that became the basis for the script.”

On whether there are major changes from the book:
“No, not really, I would say that it’s a really faithful adaptation. You know, whenever you’re adapting something that’s a 12- or 14-hour read down to something that has to be around two hours, there’s going to be some cuts. We definitely made some cuts. I don’t want to go into that, but we did it with Suzanne, and I would say that it’s very, very faithful. We tried to get as much as we could in there.”

On the scenes he’s most proud of:
“It’s interesting because there’s a very small blur—I want to say it’s a paragraph long in the book—but the moment in the arena when the gamemaker starts to spin the cornucopia, and I’m very proud of that. We designed a very cool sequence and created a spinning island, and that’s going to be very, very cool. So that’s kind of fun and very unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s cool.

“You know one of the very first things we shot that I like quite a lot is, there is sort of a goodbye before she goes into the arena with Liam that I like a lot. And it was actually—we shot it because we needed summer foliage and summer flowers and things like that. We actually shot it while we were in prep. Very first thing we sort of went out into the meadow, out in the mountains in north Georgia and shot this sequence over three or four hours or so, and I really like it. I think it’s really nice. Jennifer and Liam are really good in it. It’s very nice.”

On whether those IMAX rumors are true:
“Yeah, the idea is that it’s sort of mixed formats. But yeah, that’s the idea is that the arena is in the IMAX format so that once you go in the elevator and it opens up.”

On whether his actors’ jovial natures ever lead to disruptions:
“You know what? I believe that the process could be fun, I just think that making movies is really tough. And it’s stressful as it is, and I think that most of us got in this business because it’s fun to make movies. I think it should stay fun. And it’s a really fun group and a very talented group. I would say only occasionally, maybe once or twice, did it get a little rowdy on set. We had to sort of clear everybody out because it is a little distracting. Or you just nicely say, ‘Hey guys, why don’t we take this off the set and go somewhere else?’ And I will say you go with that combo of Jen and Josh and Woody together and it can be mayhem.”

On “Mockingjay”:
“Nina, John, Suzanne and I have gone through the book and created the beat sheets for it. And started going through all that and at least marking our initial ideas of what the moments would be and how it all breaks down. And Danny Strong, who’s writing the first one, is working now. So yeah, we’ve actually done a fair amount of work. We’re starting to think about where we could shoot it and all of that.”

I am loving Francis’ vision! What do you guys think?

Confirmed : Francis Lawrence will direct Mockingjay part 1 and 2

It’s official, Lionsgate has just announced that Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence will be directing Mockingjay parts 1 and 2!!

From Deadline :

Lionsgate has tapped Francis Lawrence to direct THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 and THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2. Based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling series, the films will be written by Danny Strong and star Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

Lawrence is currently directing Lionsgate’s THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, the second installment in the series that features a score by James Newton Howard and new roles played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jena Malone and Amanda Plummer.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PARTS 1 & 2 make up the third and fourth installments of heroine Katniss Everdeen’s journey as she leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates, Katniss must decipher for herself who she can trust and what needs to be done, with everything she cares for in the balance.

Lawrence’s other directing credits include WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, I AM LEGEND and CONSTANTINE.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PARTS 1 & 2 make up the third and fourth films in a series that has captivated audiences around the world. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 comes to theaters on November 21, 2014 and THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2 opens November 20, 2015.

Will Francis Lawrence direct Mockingjay parts 1 and 2?

Collider is reporting that Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence is already being tapped to director Mockingjay part 1 and 2.

According to Collider :

We have just learned that Francis Lawrence, who was hired to directThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has now been tapped to helm the remainder of the series.  While author Suzanne Collins‘ The Hunger Games books amount to a trilogy, Lionsgate has split the final novel,Mockingjay into two parts, as is now the custom for major adaptation of best-selling book series.

It is worth noting that Gary Ross, who directed the first film, decided to pass onCatching Firebecause he felt he wouldn’t have enough time to write and prep and the movie he wanted to make because of the tight production schedule.  For Lawrence, this is apparently not an obstacle.  He is currently filming Catching Fire, and will then presumably set to work immediately on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.  Catching Fire will open November 22, 2013.  Part 1 is due out on November 21, 2014 and Part 2 is set for November 20, 2015.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Mockingjay.

Just a reminder that this is just a rumor for now and not to be considered official news.

From Elizabeth Banks : Danny Strong to write ‘Mockingjay’

A few weeks ago, there was speculation that Danny Strong, known for his roles in popular tv shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gilmore girls, and writer for Game Change and Recount was the front runner to write the Mockingay script.  Today, on Elizabeth Banks website, it appears she confirms this news. Check it out :

Right now I’m filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but the powers that be are hard at work adapting book #3, Mockingjay. Going Twilight-style, the third book will be split up into two movies, both written byBuffy alum Danny Strong.

He acts and writes! He wrote the HBO flicks Game Change and Recount, so tight, I can’t wait to see what he does with Mockingjay!

Part one of Mockinjay is scheduled for release November 21, 2014, to be followed by the final film in The Hunger Games series November 20, 2015.

Reminder, none of this is official till Lionsgate confirms it, but coming from Elizabeth Banks, I’m speculating it’s likely true.
